Historical

Itzmal Izamal Mayan, meaning: dew of heaven, is a beautiful colonial town founded in the mid-sixteenth century on the ruins of an ancient Mayan city.

Geography

Located 72 miles east of Merida in the north central region of the state.

It has an average height of 13 meters above sea level. Covering an area of 275.92 square kilometers.

It boarders the following municipalities: to the north Telal Venegas and Tekanto Tepakan, south to Xocchel, Kantunil and Sudzal, esat and west Tunkas Honctun.

Climate

The region is classified as warm-sub humid with rains in summer, performing the call interrupted mid-summer drought. The average annual temperature is 27c.

Flora

According to the INEGI 2010 census Izamal has a population of 25.980 inhabitants of witch 90% lean Catholic.

Economy

The economically active population of the municipality amounted to 9.771 people, 7.693 of which are occupied and is presented as follows: Agriculture, hunting, fishing, petroleum, manufacturing, construction, electricity, trade, tourism and services.

Culture

On April 3, carried out the festivities in honor of St.Defonso, 15 to August 25 festivals are celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the population that is Our Lady of Izamal, 19 to October 28 were made processions, unions and dairies in honor of the Santo Cristo de citilpech, from 1 to December 12 celebrations are held in honor of the Immaculate Conception. 

For the holidays of All Saints and Faithful Departed is traditional to place an alter in the main site of the house where the dead are offered food that they like and the traditional chicken Mucbi accompanied by atole of corn, and hot chocolate water.

At parties people dance regional jaranas making skills among participants.

Gastronomy

The traditional dishes are: frijol con puerco, chaya con huevo, puchero de gallina, queso relleno, salbutes, panuchos, pipian de vernado, papadzules, longaniza, cochinita pibil, joroches, mucbi pollo y tamales. 

The desserts are: yuca con miel, calabaza melada, camote con coco, cocoyol, melcocha, arepas, tejocotes en almibar or dulce de ciricote. 

The desert alone Izamal traditional drinks are: Xtabentun, balche, bebida de anis, pozole con coco or horchata.

Attractions

The church and former convent of St.Anthony of Padua.

There are also other important monuments as the Church of the Virgen de la Candelaria and the church of St.Joseph and the estates os Sacala, St.Elizabeth and an arc of XVII century.

The temple of the Remedies, the chapels of Santa Cruz, San Roman and San Defonso, all in the county seat, the temple of the Holy Cross in citilcum, the Temple of Santa Clara, Kimbila.
