Toponimia (place name)

The spanish give the name to YUCATAN during  the first explorations, for the reason that spanish will ask them questions and they respond with the Phrase "uh yu ka tan" that in Mayan is "listen how they talk" and the comquistadors would understand YUCATAN. Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Book "Historia Verdadera de la Comquista de la Nueva Espana" (True story from the conquest of the New Spain) He claims YUCATAN says "Tierra de Yucas" (Land of Yucca) Plants were cultured by the Mayas, were is a important  food complement.

Geography

 


YUCATAN is located in the south of Mexico city that extends about 43,379 km2. Limits the North with the Golf of Mexico, an the southeast with the state of Quintana Roo and the southwest with Campeche state. Represents a 2.21% of the Mexican territory. The Annual temperature averages between 24C and 26C, that crates a pleasant atmosphere. Clothing



The clothing in the state of Yucatan is a set of ideas combine based on the Mayas and Spanish. The women used the authentic huipil, attire by a cotton dress with a rectangular long form, adored with embroidery color thread, that excels the embroidery. The Terno(suit) is women's gala wear in Yucatan, is form by three parts: Jubon, Hupil and Fusan.

Each Piece is embroidery with lace and to complete they use white slippers with a touch of lace or colorful flowers. Man used a simple long or short (Guayabera) shirt made with cotton, decorated with four pockets in the front, Generally they used white completing with a red handkerchief and a jipijapa(hat).

Music and Dance


La Jarana is the typical dance for celebrations in Yucatan. Generally the orchestra is two clarinets, two trumpets, two trombones, guiro and timbales. The "Vaqueria" is the name given the dance that they offer to the Yucatecos representing character, screaming "Bomba" and expressing something  satirical or picaresque's ideas.

Typical Dances from Yucatan also are "El Baile de los Listones" , "El Baile de la Danza de Cochino" and the "Trova Yucateca" is one of the main musical genres for the state, it emerged from the first decade in the XX century and they still in force by the Yucatecos. Yucatan is the state with traditions, during the year they have number of festivities, like Hanal Pixan: Ceremony for the day of the dead, in were they make offerings to the love ones when they were live. This Offerings are placed in an altar in the best part of the house in where they also make the favorite food liked in life.

The first and second day of november ones the love ones come to take the grace of the food, the people can take them and enjoy them self's. Also locations around have festivities for the Santo Patron of the place, in witch they make cultural events, food, fireworks, art events and more. Gastronomy


The Yucatan gastronomy is very recognized in mexico and the world. The food is a fusion of ingredients from the spanish and mayans, contributions also from cuba given the Mestizaje culinary flavor and unmatched delicious aroma.
